Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 16, 2026

The short version: your assessment answers never leave your device. We do not collect, store, or have any access to your responses.

1. Overview

The Smart Home Security Scorecard is designed privacy-first. This policy explains what data is used, how it stays on your device, and what limited analytics we collect to improve the tool.

2. Assessment Data

All assessment questions are answered and scored entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. No assessment responses, scores, or results are ever transmitted to our servers, third parties, or any external system.

We have no technical ability to view your answers — we never receive them.

3. Browser Local Storage

To allow you to resume an incomplete assessment, your in-progress answers are saved to your browser's localStorage under the key smarthome_assessment_2026. This data:

  • Exists only on your device
  • Is never transmitted to our servers or any third party
  • Can be cleared at any time by clicking "Start New Assessment" or by clearing your browser's site data
  • Persists until you manually clear it or clear your browser cache

A separate key (smarthome_welcome_shown_2026) records whether you have dismissed the welcome screen. This contains no personal data.

4. Analytics

We use Google Analytics (via Google Tag Manager) to collect anonymous, aggregate usage data. This helps us understand general traffic patterns and improve the tool.

Google Analytics does not receive:

  • Your assessment responses or answers
  • Your security scores or risk level
  • Any personally identifiable information

Google Analytics may collect:

  • Pages visited and time on page
  • General geographic region (country/city level)
  • Browser type and device category
  • Referring website

Google Analytics is a third-party service operated by Google LLC. Their privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.

5. Email Results Feature

The "Email Results" button opens your device's default email client with a pre-filled summary of your score and top recommendations. This email is composed and sent entirely by your email client — we do not transmit, receive, or process it. We have no visibility into whether the email is sent or to whom.

6. AI Surveillance Data Notice

The 2026 edition of this tool includes questions about AI-powered surveillance systems (facial recognition, behavioural analytics, biometric access control). This assessment tool does not process or store any biometric data.

If you use this tool to evaluate AI surveillance systems at your property, you are responsible for ensuring that your use of those systems complies with applicable biometric privacy laws, including but not limited to the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR Article 9), and similar legislation in your jurisdiction.

7. Partner and Resource Links

This tool links to related resources operated by Secure IoT House and affiliated organisations (including Secure IoT Office, SSAE Physical Security, My Privacy Blog, and MicroSec Tools). These are sister properties within the same organisation network, not independent third-party endorsers. Each operates its own privacy policy.

8. Children's Privacy

This tool is intended for adults managing residential security systems. We do not knowingly collect any data from children under 13.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes to the tool or applicable law. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision.
